What do I need to run Slices?
Operating System: Slices will run on Windows 95 and Windows 98 operating systems. At this time it won't run on Windows 2000 and hasn't been tested on Windows NT. There are no plans to make Slices available for non-Windows operating systems.
Processor speed: This is an important factor in the ease of viewing volume images. A 450 MHz Pentium II processor is sufficient for efficiently viewing and manipulating most volume images. Slower processors will result in slower slice updates.
RAM:The amount of RAM needed to view and manipulate a volume depends on the dimensions of the volume. Starting the application alone doesn't require significant RAM, but, for example, viewing and manipulating a 256x256x180 volume will require an additional 25MB of RAM (beyond what the operating system and other running applications require). A computer with 128MB of RAM should be sufficient for viewing most volumes.
Storage: Slices requires very little hard drive space (about 1 MB). It's the volume images that require the real estate. A single 256x256x180 volume requires 12MB of storage.
Data: In addition to the above system requirements for running Slices, you will also need a volume image or a set of registered 2-D images. You can either use a sample volume supplied by ScaleSpace (a small sample volume comes packaged with Slices), or provide one of your own. If you do the latter, you'll need to continue reading.
Currently, Slices only recognizes a single volume file format. It can also load sets of registered 2-D images of any common image format. Reading raw data from a general format and recognizing a few common volume formats (e.g. Analyze) will soon be added to Slices' capabilities.
The sample volumes are in a simple format called "Slices Volume", usually with the extension ".vol". The files contain a description of the volume followed by uncompressed value data. Slices saves new or altered volumes to this format.
If you want to view your own volume data, there are two options:
- Save each plane as an image, with the file name including the plane number (e.g. Name1.tif , Name2.tif, ...), and load these into Slices using File | Load Serial Images.
- Read the "Slices Volume" format specification, and write your volume to a file that conforms to this specification.

How do I uninstall Slices?
When Slices is installed on your computer a folder is created (usually C:\Program Files\Slices) with four files in it, and a shortcut for Slices is placed on your desktop. To uninstall Slices:
- Move any volume images from the Slices folder that you want to save.
- Delete the Slices folder.
- Delete the shortcut to Slices on the desktop.
